Building Communication and Preventing Conflict – Three Actions to Practise

Informal meetings. We conducted ‘Tent Time’ huddled around a stove in a tent or sheltering against the wind around a sledge. In other words, these were not highly‐formalised gatherings – they required very little by way of organisation or forward planning.

Regular meetings. At least once a day, we would have ‘Tent Time’ whilst out on the ice. That might not be practical for many organisations, but leaving it too long can result in an unacceptable build‐up of tension which can be subsequently very hard to clear.

Facilitated discussions. Initially, ‘Tent Time’ might need to be guided, in order to set down the ‘rules’ and to allow everybody a fair say. However, once the procedure is ‘known’ and ‘owned’, it runs all by itself.
